Young Professionals Engaged in Stark County

There was some conversation about books that different people in YStark! might happen to be reading, and that some of us might want to discuss these books in an informal setting.

Recently I finished reading "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell, this is a very interesting book with insights into what makes some people very good at their jobs, careers, and interests.  It is worth the read in my opinion for anyone who is interested in how to focus there time and effort on becoming tuly great at anything.

I am currently reading "Art and Physics" by Leonard Shlain.  This is an examination of modern art and modern contemporary physics.  How the two fields are most often seen as unrelated, but how in truth there are strong ties and the two feed off each other.  i am currently about a third of the way through this book, and if anyone else out there is reading it and would lke to discuss please let me know.

I would be interested in what books you might be reading, and what is next on you "to read" list.  Maybe we can start the next book at the same time, and discuss it here on the forum and or over a coffee downtown sometime.

I look forward to hearing what your reading.

Rob I am currently reading The Science of Wallace D. Wattles which discusses The science of Getting Rich, The Science of Being Well, and The Science of Being Great. This book is very intriguing and hard to put down. It discusses how to use your mind to attract more of what you want and less of what you don't. Another book that I read in conjunction with Wallace D. Wattles is How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie which is incredible. It teaches how to be a people person in ways you might have never thought to approach a person even if you are a people person. From beginning to end the ideas are unique and simple.

Right now I'm reading ABC's and 123's to my 3-year old! In all seriousness, I love these recommendations and hope to pick up a "grown-up" book for consumption soon. Given my penchant for personality profiling and how it relates to professional development, I recently read Now, Discover Your Strengths. It helps to identify personal strengths and how to utilize them within the workplace.

Also, even though its not new, I still find Richard Florida's 'Rise of the Creative Class' quite fascinating and I believe quite appropriate for our generation. Its been some time since I read it, but I think its insightful and thought-provoking as we think about community and economic development.

I was forwarded an article recently that you might find of interest: http://www.paulgraham.com/siliconvalley.html. A unique perspective that seems to simplify what it takes to become the next Silicon Valley, but perhaps some food for thought when wanting to figure out how we make ourselves an attractive community to live, work and play in.

I'm currently reading "The Tipping pint" by Malcolm Gladwell and "First Things First" by Stephen Covey.

Some other favorites in the same genre are Steven Coveys "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and the incredible book on personal finance - Dave Ramsey's "Roral Money Makeover." If you get the chance to take Dave Ramsey's "Financial Peace University" I highly recommend it. It changed my whole family's lives.
